Vacation Optimizer

Tell us how many leave days you have, and we will find the best way to spend them. The optimizer combines your leave with public holidays and weekends to create the longest possible breaks.

How the Optimizer Works

1
Select your country and year

The tool loads all official public holidays for your country. Over 190 countries are supported with data from 2024 to 2030.

2
Enter your available leave days

Set how many vacation days you can use this year. The optimizer will distribute them across the year for maximum effect.

3
The algorithm scans every possibility

A sliding window evaluates all positions where leave days can be placed adjacent to holidays and weekends, maximizing consecutive days off.

4
Review ranked results

The top vacation windows are shown, sorted by total days off. Each result includes the exact dates, leave days needed, and efficiency ratio.

Understanding the Algorithm

The optimizer builds a day-by-day calendar for the entire year, marking each day as either a free day (weekend or public holiday) or a working day. It then uses a sliding window approach to find clusters of working days surrounded by free days.

For each cluster, it calculates how many leave days you would need to "fill the gap" and how many total consecutive days off you would get. The best windows are those where a small number of leave days unlocks a disproportionately long break.

The efficiency ratio (total days off / leave days used) helps you compare opportunities. A ratio of 5x means you get 5 days off for every 1 leave day used.

Tips for Vacation Planning

Prioritize high-efficiency windows

Start with vacation windows that have the highest efficiency ratio. These give you the most time off per leave day and are the core of smart vacation planning.

Spread your leave across the year

Instead of using all leave days at once, distribute them across multiple high-efficiency windows throughout the year for regular breaks.

Coordinate with your team

Share your optimized plan with colleagues. If everyone uses the same tool, you can stagger leave to maintain team coverage while maximizing individual time off.

Efficiency Ratio Guide

Ratio Rating Example scenario
5x+ Excellent 1 leave day between a holiday and weekend produces 5+ days off
3x-4x Good 2 leave days bridging two weekends creates 6-8 days off
2x Fair 5 leave days producing a 10-day break including two weekends

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the vacation optimizer work?

The optimizer loads official public holidays for your country and year, then builds a calendar marking weekends and holidays as free days. It scans every possible placement of your leave days using a sliding window algorithm and ranks the results by total consecutive days off.

What is the best strategy for taking leave?

Place leave days adjacent to existing free days (holidays and weekends). A single leave day between a Thursday holiday and a weekend creates a 4-day break. The optimizer finds all such opportunities automatically and ranks them by efficiency.

Does it consider public holidays?

Yes. Public holidays are treated as free days, just like weekends. The optimizer specifically targets the gaps between holidays and weekends where leave days have the most impact.

Can I use this for part-time schedules?

The current version assumes a standard Monday-to-Friday work week. If you work a different schedule, the weekend calculations may not match your situation exactly.

How far ahead can I plan?

Holiday data is available from 2024 through 2030, so you can optimize your vacation for any of those years.

Are the results guaranteed to be optimal?

The algorithm evaluates all possible vacation windows around holidays and weekends. The top results shown are the best non-overlapping options found. For very large leave budgets, there may be combinations of multiple shorter breaks that are also worth considering.
